{"id":495,"date":"2016-02-16T10:45:45","date_gmt":"2016-02-16T10:45:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.coldnoseconsulting.com\/?p=495"},"modified":"2020-02-26T14:13:44","modified_gmt":"2020-02-26T14:13:44","slug":"volume-9a-the-trumpet-chronicles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/coldnose.us\/index.php\/2016\/02\/volume-9a-the-trumpet-chronicles\/","title":{"rendered":"Volume 9A &#8211; The Trumpet Chronicles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-452\" src=\"http:\/\/www.coldnoseconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/mendez1-300x147.jpg\" alt=\"mendez1\" width=\"300\" height=\"147\" \/>I started to just update <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coldnoseconsulting.com\/2016\/02\/volume-9-the-trumpet-chronicles\/\">Volume 9<\/a>\u00a0after last night&#8217;s practice, but figured I would &#8220;thrill&#8221; the couple of you who actually read these chronicles with a new entry.<\/p>\n<p>I called it &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.coldnoseconsulting.com\/?p=495\">Volume 9A<\/a>&#8221; since it is a continuation of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.coldnoseconsulting.com\/2016\/02\/volume-9-the-trumpet-chronicles\/\">Volume 9<\/a>. \u00a0Catchy name, huh?<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Consider the following scenario&#8230;. two trumpets, same make and model, about 3 years of difference in manufacture date, one in silver plate, and the other in lacquered brass. \u00a0The brass one was bought from Goodwill, and the silver horn\u00a0was battled for in a heated eBay auction.<\/p>\n<p>It would be reasonable to assume (uh oh) that both horns would have similar playing characteristics, right?<\/p>\n<p>Nope. \u00a0Not even close.<\/p>\n<p>As I shared in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.coldnoseconsulting.com\/2016\/02\/volume-9-the-trumpet-chronicles\/\">Volume 9<\/a>\u00a0entry, I finally had gotten the tuning slide unstuck from my brass\u00a0Ambassador, so I thought I&#8217;d take it to the band practice and see how it did. \u00a0I am using the same Denis Wick mouthpiece that my friend Donnie gave to me. \u00a0I will remember to write down the size for you eventually.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t notice it previously (because I didn&#8217;t have anything to compare it to), but it is much easier\u00a0to push air through the brass\u00a0Ambassador than the silver one. \u00a0I immediately noticed that I had so much more sound with minimal effort through the brass Ambassador. \u00a0I noticed that I was having to force air through the silver horn, where it just flowed through with the brass one. \u00a0The tone on the silver trumpet seemed to be dampened or muffled.<\/p>\n<p>I have better tone and projection of sound with the brass horn, with the effort to do so being much less than before. \u00a0This is weird to me, as there has never been any difference to me in air flow while playing a flute or saxophone. \u00a0I used the same amount of air and effort to play my first Bundy flute as I did playing my Selmer Signet professional model flute. \u00a0If there WAS any difference, I&#8217;ve never noticed it.<\/p>\n<p>And, as a neophyte trumpet player, I thought all the gibberish about this cup and that bore, and this rim configuration was nonsense. \u00a0There couldn&#8217;t be that much difference. \u00a0Could there?<\/p>\n<p>There is. \u00a0There really is.<\/p>\n<p>My own informal tests have proven it. \u00a0Why else would I play better using a completely different mouthpiece than the tried-and-true Bach 7C on which everyone starts trumpet? \u00a0 Why else would two of the same model of trumpet play so differently?<\/p>\n<p>So&#8230;.
