{"id":482,"date":"2016-02-01T16:04:56","date_gmt":"2016-02-01T16:04:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.coldnoseconsulting.com\/?p=482"},"modified":"2020-02-26T14:13:59","modified_gmt":"2020-02-26T14:13:59","slug":"volume-8-the-trumpet-chronicles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/coldnose.us\/index.php\/2016\/02\/volume-8-the-trumpet-chronicles\/","title":{"rendered":"Volume 8 &#8211; The Trumpet Chronicles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-483\" src=\"http:\/\/www.coldnoseconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/olds-recording-offset-trumpet-300x127.jpg\" alt=\"olds-recording-offset-trumpet\" width=\"300\" height=\"127\" \/>There hasn&#8217;t been too much going on with the trumpet chronicling lately. \u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>We started community band practice again. \u00a0Tonight is the 2nd practice of the year.<\/p>\n<p>I have been using my friend Donnie&#8217;s Denis Wick mouthpiece, and I&#8217;m getting used to it. \u00a0The rim is larger in diameter than the Yamaha 14B4 mouthpiece I was using. \u00a0It has a shallower cup, and a larger throat (I think that&#8217;s the name of the hole in the mouthpiece at the bottom of the cup).<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m also learning it&#8217;s better to skip measure or two that are proving to be a technical challenge to avoid a\u00a0dirty look from the lead trumpet player. \u00a0I make note of those passages and practice them at home.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of trumpet players, there is a very good YouTube video from the Gordon Goodwin Big Phat Band, called &#8220;Backrow Politics&#8221;, which features the four trumpet players, Bob Saunders, Wayne Bergeron,\u00a0Willie Murillo, and Dan Savant. \u00a0It&#8217;s worth a look.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">[embedyt] http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-dVCeiaxTZA[\/embedyt]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If you have some time you want to kill, YouTube is a great place to do so&#8230; it&#8217;s a black hole similar to Pinterest.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I was looking up video of someone playing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=EGBB0HBPf0A\">a contrabass trombone<\/a>, which led me to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=0ahUKEwjexe20pNfKAhWOcY4KHeZ7CX4QFggdMAA&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FCimbasso&amp;usg=AFQjCNH_PoZ_IrCz5ucLDhMFEXXsPJthoA&amp;sig2=Ii4wXojFEL3W6CCWbzr65A\">cimbasso<\/a>, and from there into some of the more &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=v62YjjV-Roo\">unusual<\/a>&#8221; instruments that exist. \u00a0For example, there is a tuba called the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OK1GDkvFdL4\">&#8220;titanic tuba&#8221; that is supposed to be the biggest one in the world<\/a>\u00a0(you can hear someone try to play it from the linked video). \u00a0Then I somehow ended up listening to someone playing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Qmxnp_3KUt0\">subcontrabass flute<\/a>. \u00a0Fascinating (but you have to do the Spock eyebrow). \u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wu3X6R5BIDQ\">I listened to James Morrison (a superb Aussie trumpet player) &#8220;auditioning&#8221; for the Big Phat Band on another version of &#8220;Backrow Politics&#8221;<\/a>, which then led me to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VxZxI-yAmvg\">Wayne Bergeron playing Maynard Ferguson&#8217;s arrangement of &#8220;MacArthur Park&#8221;<\/a>. \u00a0Whew. \u00a0From there, I delved into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mk_9h6UP2Cs\">someone playing a Tiger brand plastic trombone and tuba<\/a>. \u00a0Next it was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xZO5KTJTwhE\">the Canadian Brass playing &#8220;Flight of the Bumblebee&#8221;<\/a>. \u00a0 Then it was an epic cover of the theme to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vTDEVUlCClk\">&#8220;The Game of Thrones&#8221; by a low brass ensemble<\/a>. \u00a0I&#8217;m not familiar with this music, but if you&#8217;re a &#8220;heavy metal&#8221; (tuba) fan, you definitely should watch this one. \u00a0Next I watched\u00a0some guy named <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=r2VG_sOfA4Q\">Oren Marshall playing Bach&#8217;s &#8220;Badinerie from the Orchestral Suite No 2 in B Minor<\/a>&#8221; on the weirdest looking tuba I have ever seen. \u00a0It kind of resembles the shape of a saxophone, best I could tell. \u00a0I assume it was a custom build. \u00a0Finally, I wrapped up by watching <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/6PqUW4dPY4Q\">Jon Sass\u00a0performing his composition &#8220;Meltdown&#8221; with members of UNITUBA and guests from the University of Iowa tuba studio<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Bam! \u00a0Three hours wasted&#8230; just like that. \u00a0And I didn&#8217;t even list the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mLpexftRenE\">cat videos<\/a>, or the one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wdy17GmkpWc\">P-51 Mustang startup and fly-by<\/a>, or even this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=JHXNaYoguNU\">amazing drum line video by the Top Secret Drum Corps of Basel<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yu0FjmcJva8\">Antoine Dufour<\/a>\u00a0or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5VzprYCxPBQ\">Lindsay Sterling<\/a>\u00a0or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ASZSmjxBLIc\">chainsaw ice racing<\/a>\u00a0or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=uOPse9Xz8d4\">twin turbo 60s GMC pickup truck<\/a>\u00a0or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DSOOOJvMr5k\">5000 ducklings<\/a>\u00a0(loudspeaker) ALRIGHT MR.
