Volume 11: The Trumpet Chronicles is Now the Saxophone Chronicles

Since this website used to reside at a different address, until the idiots who run my web hosting somehow didn’t notify me of a domain name renewal, I doubt many of you (well, the one or two who’ve visited so far) are familiar with the Trumpet Chronicles.  This was a series of articles I wrote as I wandered my way through the intricacies of trumpet selection and mouthpiece searching.

Volume 9A – The Trumpet Chronicles

mendez1I started to just update Volume 9 after last night’s practice, but figured I would “thrill” the couple of you who actually read these chronicles with a new entry.

I called it “Volume 9A” since it is a continuation of Volume 9.  Catchy name, huh?

Volume 7 – The Trumpet Chronicles (Happy New Year)

Red-Brass-Silver-Plated-flugelhornThe holidays are typically a slow time for trumpeting, at least for me.  But there have been a few things going on that are noteworthy.  See what I did there?  See?  C’mon, it wasn’t THAT bad! Continue reading “Volume 7 – The Trumpet Chronicles (Happy New Year)”

Volume 5 – The Trumpet Chronicles

yam-11So, last night I was at band practice.  We were quickly running through some of the Christmas music for our first concert on the 13th.  I was using the Yamaha 11 mouthpiece I mentioned in a previous post with my silver Olds Ambassador trumpet.  Strangely, my lip got really tired way early in the practice, long before I expected it to.  On a whim, I switched to my generic 3C mouthpiece, and quickly found new life and endurance.  My tonal quality came back substantially also. Volume 4 – The Trumpet Chronicles

Yesterday, I started the down-sizing of my instrument collection.  It was a traumatic time, but I managed to get through it.

I have several horns and mouthpieces out on eBay at the moment:

Volume 2 – The Trumpet Chronicles

yam-11I ordered and received a Yamaha 11 Japan mouthpiece this week.  Depending on who you read online, it’s either like a Shilke 11 (R. Shilke consulted for Yamaha in the 60s) or a Bach 7C.  One site even said it was somewhere between a Bach 3C and 5C.

I don’t know.  I’m a woodwind guy, remember? Continue reading “Volume 2 – The Trumpet Chronicles”

Volume 1 – The Trumpet Chronicles

(I’m starting a new series today, called “The Trumpet Chronicles”, about my come-back journey through the world of trumpets and mouthpieces, through the eyes of a former woodwind guy.  Enjoy(?), or ignore.)

I had a little time tonight, so I played around with the 3 different trumpets I now have, and with a couple of different mouthpieces. Continue reading “Volume 1 – The Trumpet Chronicles”
